As we struggle to start a discussion about impeachement in the media and across the country, following is information about a promising new book making the case for impeachment coming out from a publisher I work for. Got excited when I found out about it this morning.

Title: The Case for Impeachment: How to Get Rid of President George W. Bush

Authors: DAVID LINDORFF, journalist for three decades (The Nation, BusinessWeek, Salon) and author of the book This Can't Be Happening: Resisting the Disintegration of American Democracy. BARBARA OLSHANSKY, the Director Counsel for The Center for Constitutional Rights who is currently managing habeas litigation on behalf of 300 detainees held at Guantanamo Bay.

Publisher: St. Martin's Press, who has also published Joe Conason's Big Lies and Truth and Duty by ousted 60 Minutes producer Mary Mapes.

The Case for Impeachment explains the legal history of impeachment, the grounds for impeaching George W. Bush, and brings forth over a dozen articles of impeachment including:

  • Lying to and inducing Congress and the American people into an unjust war.

  • Allowing his friends, families, and business cronies to profiteer off the war in Iraq -- a crime tatamount to treason.

  • Authorizing torture and rendition of prisoners of war and suspected terrorists -- a complete violation of the Geneva Conventions, a treaty the U.S. has signed and is therefore part of our law.

  • Stripping American citizens of their Constitutional rights -- holding people with no charge, offering them no trail, and never allowing them to face their accusers.

  • Failing in almost every way possible to defent the homeland and our borders.

St. Martin's will be aggressive in getting the authors publicity - it'll be interesting to see how the networks respond.  And yeah, I know the Repub controlled Congress won't impeach, but it's beneficial to the Democratic (and human) cause to inject rightful discourse of impeachment into the mainstream.  And who knows?  If approval ratings keep dipping and damaging information keeps leaking, maybe the Republicans in Congress will be forced to respond to an angry constituency by forcing this treasonous, dangerous administration out.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from your hotlist?
Are you sure you want to remove your recommendation? You can only recommend a diary once, so you will not be able to re-recommend it afterwards.
Rescue this diary, and add a note:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from Rescue?
Choose where to republish this diary. The diary will be added to the queue for that group. Publish it from the queue to make it appear.

You must be a member of a group to use this feature.

Add a quick update to your diary without changing the diary itself:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary?
(The diary will be removed from the site and returned to your drafts for further editing.)
(The diary will be removed.)
Are you sure you want to save these changes to the published diary?

works for me.  The more that impeachment is discussed, the easier time we'll have when we take over the House in 2007.

And as an adjunct to your diary, may I refer you to a terrific Q&A on a Cheney impeachment from Mary Maxwell at Global Research?:

It was the Republicans that told Nixon he had to step down in 1974. With lower polls, Congress is his weak link. They will see their jobs on the line, so the pressure will be on them to do something.

Let's face it, a change in leadership is a possibility in 2006. That has to scare the Republicans.

Talking about the possibility of Impeachment is going to advance the issue.

  •  I would have preferred (none)
"The Case for Chimpeachment" as the title, and a January release, but I'll be content to accept that the folks at St. Martin's Press knows a little more about these things than I do.
  •  GWB + GOP Congress= (none)

Not enough truly competitive races in 06 to change power.
    Nice to entertain it though.

    •  Light through the cracks ... (none)
More and more and more people I speak with are learning the truth, and as they do so they are becoming angry.  Bush has never faced an angry populace.  Bu$hCo is going to feel some phosphorus-like heat when America takes stock of its larders and finds that $1,000,000,000,000 has been looted and nothing gained.  And that heat will turn to fire as the majority concludes that Bu$hCo's foreign (so-called) policy has armed, expanded, and emboldened the enemy.  There may be an arranged exit, but I don't see Bush finishing his term.

  •  Great news (none)
It is great to see more attention paid to impeachment.  Lying to Congress (as in a State of the Union speech) is a crime under 18 U.S.C. 1001.  So is withholding material information from Congress (say, the fact that the CIA and State Department have doubts about the claims being made in said speech).

This certainly is not the first book on impeaching Bush, and I hope it is not the last.  See the list of books at
for some of the others, such as those by Dean and Bonifaz.  This new book should certainly be added there.

A new poll found that a majority of Americans support impeachment and that major media unanimously refuse to report this fact.

Still, the movement is growing.  We are getting to be harder and harder to ignore (but they'll keep trying to ignore us).
